While the pagan practice of blessing newly launched vessels with blood (often human) or red wine to ensure their good fortune goes back many centuries to Viking, or Greek, or Phoencian times (it's a bit unclear), the presumably French practice, originating in the mid-1800s, of breaking a bottle of champagne on the bow of the boat, has caught on in modern times. The traditional toast, by the way is, “To the sailors of (the name of your boat).” This convenient christening bottle provides an easy way to continue the tradition. The bottle is scored to allow it to break easily (which it must do on the first try), and it comes with a fine mesh bag to ensure that the broken pieces of glass don't end up in the water. More convenient than sacrificing a goat....
