Both systems provide powerful 4 kW, 72 nautical mile X-band digital radar, designed for use with a remote Garmin network display (a compatible chartplotter or MFD).
The GMR 404 4-foot scanner has a 1.8° beam width, while the GMR 406 6-foot array takes beam width down to 1.1° for even greater target separation.
The pedestal unit (sold separately) has an integrated digital signal processor, motor and 2-speed gearbox. Digital processing allows for more precise recognition, enhancement, and filtering of radar echoes, making the finished display easier to read and interpret. Note that these scanners are not high definition models. As an aid to locational awareness, you can overlay the radar image on a chartplotter's map page. You also can split the on-screen display so you can view the map and the standard radar page simultaneously. Dual 24/48 rpm rotation speeds provide the option for a higher rotation speed to provide more rapid target position updates during close-range maneuvering.
