Chip On Board - COB - LEDs offer high power and uniformity with a small light emitting surface. This allows light fixture designers greater creative freedom while lowering costs.
A chip on board LED is basically an LED chip diode built directly on a circuit board. The chips are bonded directly into the printed circuit board at the manufacturer — reducing the number of components and eliminating many steps in the manufacturing process.
With fewer components in the LED chip, thermal conductivity is directed at the circuit board, with an average of 25% less heat emitted from the LED chip. Less heat means much higher output efficiency and lower failure rates. Spot soldering is no longer necessary as the chip is built directly onto the circuit board. Less welding means lower failure rates.
PC lenses are no longer needed, therefore light visibility is increased. Less spacing between LED chips is possible, so a much wider surface can be covered by the COB LED's light beam with less glare. CRI is increased due to the wider beam angle.
