Aluma Protect is Pettit's "go-to" primer when painting bare (unpainted) aluminum surfaces.*
Aluma Protect 4400/4401 is a 2-part, strontium chromate epoxy primer that forms a superior barrier coat over roughened bare aluminum. (Any bare aluminum surface, even "factory new", will need to be sandblasted, sanded, or ground so that a bonding "tooth" is present before it can be painted.)
Aluma Protect 4400 is designed to be used as an initial primer coating over bare aluminum hulls and outdrives.
Since it will chalk if not topcoated, should be overcoated with Pettit Protect 4700 epoxy barrier coat primer before finishing with antifouling paint. See Related Products.
This two product sytem provides maximum resistance to penetration by fresh or salt water, thus eliminating corrosion. It resists water, industrial chemical fumes, and very humid environments. It is an excellent long-term barrier to reduce galvanic corrosion in aluminum vessels.
• Smooth surface provides an excellent bonding surface for additional primers or topcoats
• Easy to mix (1:1 ratio) and apply
• Strontium chromate provides excellent corrosion resistance for metal substrates - particularly aluminum
• May be applied by brush, roller, conventional or airless spray (use appropriate respirators)
• Thinning is not normally required for application; small amounts of 97 Epoxy Thinner may be used if necessary to facilitate application
• Theoretical coverage: 800 sq ft for a 2 gal kit
• One or two coats of Aluma Protect 4400/4401 should be overcoated with Pettit Protect 4700/4701 to provide a corrosion resistant barrier for use on all aluminum craft and surfaces. See Related Products
• Not recommended for use on bare steel – use Pettit Rustlok 6980, followed by Pettit Protect Epoxy Primer 4700/4701 on bare steel
* For painting previously painted or primed aluminum refer to the technical document links in this entry.
