A Flame Arrestor is a device which allows gases to pass through it, but stops the passage of a flame - in order to prevent a fire or explosion.

On carburated marine engines, flame arrestors ensure that an engine backfire does not cause the explosion of any gasoline vapors which may exist nearby, or within the engine compartment.
Typically made of thin metal tubes, gauze, or screening, flame arrestors work by rapidly conducting heat away from any flames that attempt to pass through them - cooling the flame to the point where it is extinguished.
