The Splash-Stop ensures that any overflowing fuel or froth generated during refueling cannot come back out of the deck fill, thereby soiling the deck and possibly polluting the water. It is suitable for both diesel and gasoline fuels.
The Splash-Stop for fuel is connected directly under the deck fill plate and also contains an integral tank vent connection (the horizontal brass fitting in the image).
Excess fuel is collected in a parallel hose, which functions as a reservoir (represented by the clear tube in the accompanying image). The excess fuel is returned from the reservoir hose back into the tank, via the original tank vent fitting on the tank.
If the tank vent exit is near the cockpit, an odor filter for diesel fuel may be fitted in the tank vent line, to prevent unpleasant smells on deck,
An odor filter is not suitable for use with gasoline tanks.
If the filter is located well above the deck entry, the tank vent line may exit the hull lower than the deck level, if required; see accompanying image.
The capacity of the reservoir is determined by the length and diameter of the hose used.
A 1-1/2" diameter reservoir hose has a capacity of 0.08 gallons per foot.
A 2" diameter hose, a capacity of 0.15 gallons per foot.
For a tank of 10.5 gal. a minimum reservoir capacity of 0.15 gal is recommended. For a 105 gallon tank a minimum capacity of 0.50 gallons.
The fill and vent lines, as well as the hose clamps should be ordered separately. The type of hose used should conform with or exceed ISO 7840 Marine Fuel A2 or SAE J1527 A2. In addition to the Splash-Stop, a matching stainless steel or composite deck fill is also required.
