This clear, semi-permanent adhesive film is designed to provide physical protection for vulnerable painted or high traffic surfaces.
It is the same material used on the front of automobiles for chip protection from flying pebbles and road debris.
It is very durable and nearly invisible.
Extremely popular in the automotive industry — this is one thing you can do for your new car that is worth the money.
Paint Protection Film is equally effective on your boat.
Use it anywhere you're concerned about scratches or damage from foot traffic, chafing, or mechanical damage.
For example: protect cap rails at boarding stations, use it on the painted interior of transom door openings, protect topsides from fender line chafe, protect masts from halyard shackle and other hardware damage — anywhere you're trying to protect paint from damage or abrasion.
• Virtually invisible
• UV protected - resists yellowing and staining
• 6 mil thickness
• For use above the waterline only
• Can be removed by peeling, or with judicious use of a steamer or heat gun
Note -This product sticks instantly and semi-permanently. It also can show any fingerprints you leave on it.
We highly recommend you read and follow the application instructions to ensure a satisfactory result.
Heavy on the technical side...
An extensive technical application bulletin exists for this product: 75-3470-1102-9 (August 2008); please call 3M Automotive at 877-666-2277 with inquiries.
Here is a SUMMARY of the application basics from 3M's website:
With a few exceptions, Scotchgard™ Paint Protection Film must be applied wet; see below.
Wet application is required for a clear appearance.
The application surface must be clean and dry.
Wash the surface; wipe with 3M General Purpose adhesive Cleaner (3M #08984 or 08987) to remove any remaining adhesives, wax, grease, oil, tree sap, etc.
Wipe with 3M Glass cleaner (3M #08888) to remove any residual adhesive cleaner solvents - this step is NOT optional.
Wash your hands thoroughly so as to not leave any fingerprints on the Paint Protection Film when you handle it.
For smaller pieces of film, where you are sure you can place it in the correct position the first time, this is all that is necessary — just peel off the backing and apply.
For larger pieces of film, where you will possibly need to readjust the film after applying, use the following procedure:
Using a very dilute solution of Johnson's Baby Shampoo and water (2 to 4 drops per pint of water), spray the application area, the adhesive side of the film, and your fingers.
This allows you to move the film into its desired position.
Continually re-wet the film, the surface, and your fingers with the soap and water solution throughout the application process.
Properly position the film.
If stretching is not required, squeegee out the soap solution.
Dry the surface with a soft, clean cloth, such as a 3M Perfect-It™ III Detailing Cloth (3M #39016) and look for bubbles.
If bubbles are evident, they can be removed by making firm, quick squeegee "pushing strokes" toward the nearest edge of the film.
Continually re-wet your fingers, film, and surface with the soap solution during this process.
If stretching is required, or you need to tack the film into place to keep it from sliding, or for some other reason, you can secure the film in place, using a solution of 25% isopropyl alcohol and 75% water.
The alcohol solution washes away the soap and softens the adhesive to allow an instant bond.
NOTE: It's easier to work with half of the film at a time.
Get the film into place.
Lift the film up to the half-way point, and spray both sides of the film and the vehicle with the alcohol and water solution.
Spraying the film with this solution will help wash the soap solution away, and will allow a squeegee to slide easily.
Now lay the film back down and rub with a squeegee to secure the film in the desired position.
Repeat this procedure for the other half of the film.
If any stretching is required on curved surfaces, the procedure becomes more involved, and you should refer to the technical document referenced above, for recommended stretching techniques.
If you've read this far, you can probably see why professional installation is highly recommended for large applications, or those involving contoured surfaces where stretching and tucking may be required.
