These are simple barbed connectors which push into the hoses being connected, and hold by friction.
The appropriate size of one of these adapters is commonly used to connect a piece of 1" vacuum hose (like the MMM 28301, below) from a 3M central vacuum-ready random orbital sander to you house or cannister vacuum.
