Don't be confused. In spite of the prominence of the red "Regatta" on the label, even Interlux calls this paint "Baltoplate".
Baltoplate is a specialized, super-slippery, hard vinyl antifouling bottom paint for the serious power or sailboat racer.
It far exceeds the performance of conventional antifouling paints as a high speed or racing coating.
Baltoplate combines a generous concentration of cuprous oxide biocide for significant antifouling performance, with the extreme smoothness and lubricity of molybdenum disulfide to reduce surface friction and increase hull speed.
The result just might be the ultimate racing bottom finish.
With its near frictionless finish and easy burnishing, Baltoplate has become the "go to" antifouling for serious sailboat racers.
Baltoplate racing finish antifouling is unlike any bottom paint you have ever used. Its resin formulation is specifically engineered to be burnished.
Baltoplate dries to a smooth, dull finish. Sand and polish it, and watch an amazing change take place. What was a dull finish is now a super-hard, super-smooth, gleaming metallic finish.
Compared to the similar performing VC Offshore, Baltoplate is easier to burnish, uses molybdenum disulfide instead of PTFE as a low-friction additive, and Baltoplate comes in metallic white or gray compared to VC Offshore's traditional black, blue, or red.
• Multi-season biocide protection, super hard, super slick, metallic racing finish
• Suitable for use on high-speed powerboats, as well as racing sailboats
• 41.2% cuprous oxide biocide; molybdenum disulfide superlubricant additive increases hull speed
• Suitable for high fouling waters, however burnishing reduces fouling protection *
• Can be applied to fiberglass, lead, steel, wood
• Contains copper - do not apply to aluminum hulls or outdrives
• 38% solids by volume
• Apply by brush, roller, or conventional (pressure pot) spray
• Thinner: Interlux Special Thinner 216 for brushing or spraying
• Theoretical coverage is 305 ft²/gallon (brush), 240 ft²/gallon (conventional spray); minimum of 3 - 4 coats recommended, 4 on bare wood
• Practical coverage is 275 ft²/gallon (brush), 144 ft²/gallon (spray)
NOTE – Having very aggressive solvents (typical of vinyl paints), Baltoplate should not be applied over non-vinyl paints.
NOTE – Applying Baltoplate with an airless sprayer presents technical challenges and is not recommended; contact Interlux Technical Services at 800-468-7589 for more information.
Baltoplate has a limited out-of-the-water time (60 days) as the surface reacts with air to seal in the biocides – so it generally would not be considered suitable for trailered or rack-stored boats.
However, due to the popularity of the hard, very fast surface it provides, Baltoplate is still sometimes used on trailered boats, even though it may lose its antifouling properties.
If a true launch / haul, smooth, hard antifouling paint is desired, Interlux's Fiberglass Bottomkote Aqua would be preferable – as it can also be wet sanded and burnished to a hard, very smooth finish – but has an indefinite time it can be out of the water without losing its antifouling properties.
* Although burnishing Baltoplate will reduce drag and increase boat speed, it will also partially seal the coating's surface – decreasing the ability of the cuprous oxide biocide to leach out of the paint, thus making the biocide less effective at preventing fouling.
So while a burnished Baltoplate bottom will retain good antifouling properties in fresh or lower fouling/cooler waters, a burnished boat used in higher fouling/warmer waters may require some scrubbing.
