The MPS Shaft Grounding Strap serves to connect a vessel's driveshafts to its bonding system, ensuring an effective link to the hull anodes. This eliminates the necessity for shaft anodes on composite and wooden vessels.
Featuring 11 positioning holes and various locations for the spring, the shaft grounding strap is straightforward to install and sufficiently adaptable for a wide range of applications. The extensive surface area of the connection enhances cathodic protection efficiency and contributes to improved coating longevity by optimizing the link between the shaft and the anode.
For metallic vessels, the strap is particularly beneficial in establishing an additional connection to the hull anodes, providing redundancy and balancing cathodic currents. Disparities in cathodic protection levels (voltage) among the hull, stern tube, and shafts can lead to stern tube corrosion and crevice corrosion on the shaft. Achieving balance can mitigate these issues.
Vessel Bonding Systems
A Vessel Bonding System connects each of the submerged metal parts allowing their individual electrochemical potential to be grounded/earthed via a circuit.
The Shaft Grounding Strap maintains an earth connection between shafts, propellers and the bonding circuit All other Through Hull Fittings are also connected including the Maddox anode.
How It Works
A vessel bonding system connects each of the submerged metal parts allowing their individual electrochemical potential to be grounded via the circuit. The Shaft Grounding Strap is installed to provide an efficient connection between shafts and the bonding circuit. Your transom mounted Maddox anode is also connected to this circuit which enables it to sacrifice itself and protect the submerged metal parts.
